Continuing with our mini-series devoted to Victor Hugo’s depiction of characters through their reading habits, we look at Javert, from Les Miserables. Javert is found under the category characters we love to hate. He is perfection in every despicable thing he does and is. He is a sad, contemptible character who is blinded by the experiences of his own life. And, according to Hugo, he was not entirely illiterate.
